Description The Rosehill Plantation near Bluffton, S. C. has seen the years come and go in an orderly, peaceful procession. But during the Civil War, the stately home rang with clanking spurs and sabers and officer's commands as Yankees converted the estate to a command post. The title of the painting is a reference to Robert Frost's poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay." "Nature's first green is gold/ Her hardest hue to hold/ Her early leaf's a flower/ Only so an hour/ So leaf subsides to leaf/ So Eden sank to grief/So dawn goes down to day/Nothing Gold can stay. . . . |
