| My first step was to paint the face. Since it would play a key role in the success of the painting, I thought it would be best to tackle it early in this first stage. I have found that it is better to attempt the most critical aspect of a painting early in the process before other areas of the piece are developed, so that if the critical feature doesn't work out, the painting can be started over without a great loss of time and effort. Once I laid in the lighter skin tones and saw they were working, I quickly painted the light wood tones of the barn structure.
