Stage 2: Feeling the Character

I began to feel my way into the character of the wall by applying paint with a 1” wide drybrush.  I wanted to begin exploring the tension between warm and cool tones on the walls.  The effect of this effort can sometimes be futile because subsequent wash applications can mitigate some of the drybrush work.  The wood doors exhibited the warmest elements of the composition so I wanted to establish as much of the character of those elements as I could with single applications of paint.  I would apply the paint thickly, followed with water, occasionally removing portions with my fingers and tissues – repeating the process if necessary, working rapidly while the paint remained wet – until things began to feel right.
