| As with most of my paintings, I use the initial washes to place the basic structure of the composition, which become the skeleton upon which all other strokes will hang. Since the late afternoon light breaking into each of these rooms was intense with reds and yellows, I knew the shadow portions of the composition would need some cool tones. This is why I started the work with thin washes of blue and purple. As the composition structure is dependent on the floor shadows, I thought it was important to establish them early in the work.
